Peanut butter recall includes major retailers

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A recall of peanut butter and other nut products has some of the country's largest grocery stores pulling store-brand products off their shelves.

New Mexico-based Sunland Inc. has expanded its recall of peanut butter and almond butter to include cashew butters, tahini and blanched and roasted peanut products. The company, which sells its nuts and nut butters to large groceries and other food distributors around the country, recalled products under multiple brand names last month after salmonella illnesses were linked to Trader Joe's Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter, one of the brands it manufactures.

In addition to Trader Joe's, the recall over the past week has included some nut butters and nut products sold at Whole Foods Market, Target, Safeway, Fresh & Easy, Harry and David, Sprouts, Heinen's, Stop & Shop Supermarket Company, Giant Food of Landover, Md., and several other stores. Some of those retailers used Sunland ingredients in items they prepared and packaged themselves.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there have been 30 salmonella illnesses in 19 states that can be traced to the Trader Joe's peanut butter. No other foods have been linked to the illnesses, but Sunland recalled other products manufactured on the same equipment as the Trader Joe's product.

Some of the brand names included in the recall are Target's Archer Farms, Safeway's Open Nature, Earth Balance, Fresh & Easy, Late July, Heinen's, Joseph's, Natural Value, Naturally More, Peanut Power Butter, Serious Food, Snaclite Power, Sprouts Farmers Market, Sprouts, Sunland and Dogsbutter.

Sunland's recall includes 101 products, and several retailers have issued additional recalls including items made with Sunland ingredients.

Those sickened reported becoming ill between June 11 and Sept. 11, according to the CDC. Almost two-thirds of those who became ill were children under the age of 10. No deaths have been reported.

Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 hours to 72 hours after infection. It is most dangerous to children, the elderly and others with weak immune systems.

Mahela Jayawardene has defended Sri Lanka?s decision to change captain for the final Super Eight match against England, saying they did that with right intentions.

The Philippines has extended daily onshore currency trading hours by 30 minutes, which the banking industry said would align the market with the rest of Asia and better address the needs of invertors and business.

The Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP) said that from Oct. 1 the afternoon trading session on the Philippine Dealing System would run from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (0600 to 0800GMT). Afternoon sessions previously opened at 2:30 p.m.

The morning session was unchanged at 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (0100-0400 GMT).

The changed trading hours also apply to the forwards, swaps and options markets, said the BAP, which partly owns the country's electronic currency trading platform.

70-year-old Oregon farmer eaten by his hogs

On Wednesday morning, Terry V. Garner, a 70-year-old Oregon farmer, went to feed his animals. Several hours later, when he hadn?t returned, a family member went to look for him and found, on the ground of the hog enclosure, his dentures. ?

Further investigation of the enclosure revealed that the hogs, which each weighed about 700 pounds, had nearly completely eaten the farmer, although some body parts were strewn about the enclosure.

Now the Coos County Sheriff?s Office is investigating how Garner ?ended up in a position where the hogs were able to consume him.? According to the Sheriff's statement:

There are several scenarios being investigated, including that Mr. Garner had a health event, such as a heart attack, which then put him in a position where the hogs could consume him. Another scenario being investigated is that given the age and health of Mr. Garner, that one or more of the hogs knocked Mr. Garner to the ground, whereupon that hogs killed and consumed him.

The statement added that at least one of the hogs had previously been aggressive toward the farmer but did not specify how many hogs live on the farm.

Garner?s remains were examined on Saturday by a pathologist who was unable to determine how the man died. A forensic anthropologist at the University of Oregon will also examine his remains.

Answering the phone at Garner?s home Monday, a man who described himself as a family friend described the tragedy succinctly: ?What a way.?

This isn?t the first time hogs have eaten their farmers.

In 2004, a Romanian woman was knocked unconscious and eaten by the pigs on her farm, UPI reported at the time. The news report did not say whether the woman survived, only that the pigs had eaten the woman's ears and half her face.?Her husband, sedated, told reporters: "I'll never breed such beasts again."

I have heard cases where distant "kin" have come out of the woodwork even after 18 months for a newborn. Often times it may be the first that they have heard of the child. In one case, the "kin" had never even met the bio mom. She was a cousin three times removed but she wanted a baby and may have gotten that baby, I never heard the final outcome as the FPs retained an attorney to fight it.

As long as the agency can add that placement to the RU bucket, that seems to be all that matters.

OP, I understand a bit. Chubbs bio mom didn't want to do a goodbye visit in jail. We agreed to do one post finalization but she screwed up and is gone for a year now. It is really sad to me. She has seen pictures but not seen him since she abandoned him in the hospital.

Although Fran?ois F?nelon ? (1651-1715), archbishop of Cambrai, France, has been discovered for his spiritual writings, his Dialogues in Eloquence appears to be unknown in Christian circles ??but it holds pride of place in academic collections on rhetorical theory.

Already as a young preacher, F?nelon encountered difficulties in preaching to the average congregation. He disliked the ?ornamentation, epigrams, riddles and pomposity? that typified preaching in France at the time.

The study of St Augustine?s On Christian Doctrine and writings of other Church Fathers acquainted him with ancient Greek rhetoric, and soon he was moved to revitalise and adapt it to pastoral needs.

With a maestro?s touch F?nelon coupled audience differences with religious and moral truth in a way both natural and tasteful. A sermon had three purposes ???proof, portraiture, movement?.

F?nelon regarded philosophers as working only to convince, ?but the orator must go beyond, using every source capable of arousing sentiments; only then will the orator secure willful adherence to demonstrated truth?.

In his Dialogues in Eloquence, he turned to Plato: ?Any speech that leaves you cold, which only acts to amuse you and which does not affect your feelings, your heart, is not eloquent, however beautiful it may seem.?

For F?nelon solid proof required interesting the listener, then using his passions for the purpose in mind.

?One inspires him to anger at ingratitude, to horror of cruelty, to pity for misery, to love of virtue, and so on. There you have what Plato calls acting upon the soul of the listener and moving his feelings.?

A few pages later, he wrote: ?To portray is not only to describe things but to represent their surrounding features in so lively and so concrete a way that the listener imagines himself almost seeing them. And that painting ought to be a genuine likeness. It is necessary that everything in it represent vividly and naturally the sentiments of him who is speaking and the nature of the things he speaks of.?

And later: ?To succeed in painting the passions, one must study the movements which they produce ??what the eyes do, what the hands do, what the whole body does, and what its posture is; what the voice does in a man wounded by grief or struck with surprise at the sight of a wondrous thing.

?Nothing speaks so fully as the face. It expresses everything. But of the whole face, the eyes make the chief effect. A single glance thrown to good purpose will strike to the depths of the heart.?

F?nelon observed that if the preacher closes his eyes, it is because he is in a hurry to speak and his memory is working too much. Preachers who learn their sermons by heart ?can lose the thread of their discourse and keep repeating themselves like the schoolboy who doesn?t know his lesson.? F?nelon insisted: stick to your notes, stick to your pulpit. Put differently: no winging, no walkabout.

Grounded in Scripture, F?nelon criticised sermons that were ?reasonings of philosophers?.

?Sometimes we only cite the Scripture as an afterthought for the sake of appearance or ornament. Then it is no longer the word of God; it is the word and the contrivance of men.?

A contemporary described F?nelon this way: ?He possessed a natural eloquence, grace and finesse, and a most insinuating, yet noble and appropriate courtesy; an easy, clear, agreeable utterance; a wonderful power of explaining the hardest matter in a lucid, distinct manner.

?He was a man who never sought to seem cleverer than those with whom he conversed, who brought himself insensibly to their level, putting them at their ease, and enthralling them so one could neither leave him, nor mistrust him, nor help seeking him again.?

Poll: Dem. Brown leads GOP's Mandel in Ohio race

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? A new newspaper poll shows that Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown has opened up a 10-point lead over Republican challenger Josh Mandel.

The poll published Monday by The Columbus Dispatch shows the first-term Democratic senator leading Mandel, the state treasurer, by 49 percent to 39 percent. In the first Dispatch poll Aug. 26, the two were tied at 44 percent.

The mail poll of 1,662 randomly selected likely Ohio voters was taken from Sept. 19 through Saturday. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.2 percentage points.

The transformation in the Senate contest parallels that of the presidential race in the battleground state, which went from deadlocked in the Dispatch survey to a 9 percentage point margin for President Barack Obama over Republican Mitt Romney.
