'Don't mess with a woman' in your life ? The Ghanaian Journal

?Don?t mess with a woman? in your life

Posted by Contributor on August 31, 2012 at 8:20 am in Entertainment, Theatre

?There are several reasons why people would enter into a relationship, but for most people, it is because they hope it will end in marriage.

So what do you do when after years of courtship, your relationship rather leads another person to the altar?
It might seem weird but that was the experience of Naa.

She has been in a relationship with her boyfriend Tony for 5 years but throughout their courtship, her man never registered his readiness to settle down.

Thus, it was a big shock for Naa when her friend Yaa informed her that Tony was getting married to none other than her best friend, Cynthia.

This opens a new chapter in the lives of these four persons in the latest play from the stables of Roverman Productions titled ?DON?T MESS WITH A WOMAN.?

The play, written and directed by renowned playwright Uncle Ebo Whyte takes a closer look at the intricacies of relationships like that of Naa and Tony which ended without one party in the know.

Whiles for Tony, the relationship was over, Naa was sure the relationship was just going through a crisis which would be resolved with time.

If the saying ?hell hath no fury than a woman scorned? is anything to go by, then Naa?s reaction to her boyfriend?s marriage to her best friend will either prove or dispel this assertion.

?Don?t mess with a woman? opens to the public from Saturday September 1 2012 to Sunday September 2, 2012 at the National Theatre in Accra. There will be two shows each day at 4pm and then at 8pm.?Citifmonline.com

'Blue moon' on same day as Neil Armstrong service

WASHINGTON (AP) ? There's a rare 'blue moon' on Friday, a fitting wink to Neil Armstrong by the cosmic calendar.

That's the day of a private service for Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, who died last Saturday in Ohio at age 82.

A blue moon occurs when there's a second full moon in one calendar month. It won't happen again until July 2015. The full moon cycle is 29.5 days so a blue moon is uncommon and has come to mean something rare. The moon actually won't be colored blue.

Harvard University astronomer Avi Loeb said the moon is far more important to lovers, literature and folklore than to science.

Armstrong's family has suggested paying tribute to him by looking at the moon and giving the astronaut a wink.

You Can Trust Debt Solution Inc to Manage Your Financial Affairs ...

Your financial situation is in jeopardy, and you are looking for some kind of help, especially from debt solution Inc. The present situation has culminated due to overspending and the debts are mounting to put you in a critical stage and a time has reached where you cannot manage your financial affairs properly. This might have incurred due to one of the reasons like losing your job, a long period of sickness, a conjugal disharmony resulting into divorce or least chance of demise of your spouse.

You urgently need the help from debt solution Inc to come out of this stage. There should be a proper planning of financial affair management so that things start to move in a positive way. Your past records had seen the situation where you failed to make timely payments against your credit card accounts, had delayed making payments, could not make any savings at all and depended heavily on credit card withdrawals due to an immense shortage of funds at your disposal.

You should immediately take corrective actions to make your economics corrected otherwise you may have to face legal punishment as your creditors would not leave you for nothing. It is time to take up the matter, in earnest, and not to wait for the anticipated benefit on wage raise or ultimately getting declared bankrupt due to more worsening situations. Instead, exercise control over your expenses drastically and move out to obtain some assistance from debt solution Inc to get out from the critical condition of economic gloom.

Lately, there has been great news about 1000 people, who had received $300,000 from a debt reduction company for recovery in the state of Washington only. This was done as a case of violation of Consumer Protection Act by the said company. The company named in the case was DSI Financial Inc. The highly important news was announced by Christine Gregorie, the Attorney General, of Washington State. The company DSI Financial Inc has its base of operations at Boca Rota, Florida, who wanted to aim at the people who were suffering from terrible monetary crisis and wanted to improve their financial affairs.

During the financial trouble of people, the workings of various debt solution agencies have not been truly positive in the interest of the suffering people and malfunctioning in the system was noted. The common people faced negative effect of them. Such incidences referred above, that is DSI cases are instances that the Consumer Protection Act and the Commercial Telephone Solicitations Acts routinely check the workings and are still effective. The agency in question that is the DSI allowed a guarantee of $2,500 in savings against a $499 being the charge value in the credit card.

The debt solution agencies played with the financial position of the common people, misrepresented them and asked consumers not to discuss the matters with their financial advisers at all. Therefore, it is a right decision to follow the set up guidelines of debt solution Inc, the agency you can trust as your own.

Caroline Manzo on Teresa Giudice Silent Treatment: Ongoing, Awesome!

Caroline Manzo referred to Teresa Giudice as a "sociopath" and a "fraud" on last night's edition of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, going after her costar for insulting passages in Teresa's cookbook.

Does Manzo have any regrets over the falling out?

Caroline Manzo and Teresa Giudice

Nope.

Speaking to Celebuzz, Manzo said that episode was filmed in 2011 and: "I have not seen or spoken to Teresa since the reunion last year with the exception of the Bravo commercial... My last words to Teresa Giudice were at the reunion last year. And can I tell you, it’s been a wonderful year.”

Saying Giudice did not treat her "family and friends with any kind of dignity or respect," Caroline doesn't know if there's room to reconcile. She is willing to shoulder a bit of the blame, however.

"I’m big enough to say that I was rude and obnoxious and very hard on [Teresa]. But that’s the level she brought me to. But you still haven’t apologized for what you’ve done to any of us, not just me, to any of us. And until there’s a real legitimate apology, I’m not interested.

"So, why would I go back into the lion’s den? I said what I had to say. I was very blunt and very matter of fact in what I had to say. I don’t regret it. I regret that I had to do it, but I don’t regret those words because my conscience is clear now and I’m good. I don’t need to go back there. Why would I do that?"

Whose side are you on in this feud?

HBT: Braves place Sheets on DL

In news that unfortunately doesn?t come as a big surprise, the Braves just announced that Ben Sheets was placed on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.

Sheets was very effective upon joining the Braves last month, allowing one run or less in four out of his first five starts, but he has a 7.71 ERA over his last three starts. The 34-year-old right-hander lasted just 4 1/3 innings last night against the Giants, allowing four runs on nine hits and three walks. He admitted 10 days ago that he was going through a bit of dead arm phase, so it looks like things got worse.

The Braves have been using six starters recently, but they?ll presumably return to a five-man rotation. Miguel Batista had his contract purchased from Triple-A Gwinnett to take Sheets? place on the active roster. The 41-year-old right-hander posted an ugly 4.82 ERA and 34/31 K/BB ratio over 46 2/3 innings with the Mets earlier this season before being released. Sorry, Craig Calcaterra.

Penn St. riot ends aspiring Army officer's dream

Stints in jail. Hefty fines and restitution. Clouded futures. The consequences of their bad behavior have been steep for the Penn State students who took to the streets and rioted in the chaotic aftermath of Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno's firing last November.

Perhaps none have learned a harder lesson than Justin Strine, a young man from central Pennsylvania whose planned career as an Army officer is over before it began ? the casualty of his own split-second decision to put his hands on a news van, and a judicial system that considered him as guilty as classmates who did far worse that dark night in State College.

As the fall semester gets under way Monday, Strine has returned to campus, along with 15 other students found to have taken part in a nationally televised riot that caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage and embarrassed Penn State.

As he resumes his studies, nothing's the same for the 21-year-old from Hummelstown. He spent part of his summer in jail. Far worse: He's been kicked out of ROTC, his dream of carrying on his family's proud military tradition now out of reach.

"I'm losing everything I worked my entire life for," Strine said.

Strine's father, a career soldier, questions whether that's a just result.

"I had to stand by and watch my son plead guilty to something he didn't do," said Jim Strine.

Penn State sanctioned 32 students for their involvement in the riot, suspending 10 of them from one to three semesters and giving probation to the rest, university spokeswoman Lisa Powers said. Dozens of students were criminally charged, as well, and the guilty pleas have piled up over the last several months.

An estimated 4,000 to 5,000 people poured into downtown State College on Nov. 9 after the Penn State board of trustees abruptly and unexpectedly fired Paterno ? the beloved football coach who led Penn State for nearly 46 seasons ? and removed President Graham Spanier over the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal.

What began as a peaceful protest of Paterno's unceremonious dismissal quickly turned ugly as a "riotous mob," as State College police would later call it, threw bottles and rocks, damaged cars, and tore down light posts and street signs.

Strine was in his off-campus apartment when he learned of Paterno's firing. He and a few friends decided to head downtown.

It was a rare misstep in what had been a slow, steady climb toward the officer ranks.

Strine's father is a helicopter pilot and instructor whose 28-year career has taken him to Iraq and Afghanistan. His grandfather is a retired Air Force flight surgeon. His brother and sister, aunt and uncle, cousins ? all serve or have served. So it wasn't a surprise when Strine began plotting his own military career as an adolescent, reading the autobiographies of famed Army officers like Norman Schwarzkopf and Colin Powell.

At Penn State, Strine threw himself into ROTC as well as his studies, making the dean's list and spending the summer at Fort Benning, Ga., learning to jump out of airplanes. His goal: to be a pilot like his father.

"He was a good cadet," Jim Strine said.

A good cadet who made a bad decision the night of Nov. 9.

Strine had driven himself and a couple friends to the State College commercial district, where they joined thousands of other protesters. At one point Strine and his friend, Christina Assainte, found themselves in a large crowd moving toward a WTAJ-TV news van, where vandals were pelting it with rocks.

To the rippling chants of "Flip it! Flip it!" two young man approached the side of the van, motioning others to join them, a video recording shows. That set off a frenzied rush toward the van, and within seconds a large group started to push.

A second wave of spectators then pressed toward the front of the van, perhaps to get a better view. Strine and Assainte were in the front of that group.

With the vehicle already on two wheels and going over, Strine placed his palms on the hood. Four seconds later, the van was on its side. But that's all it took for police and prosecutors to charge him with felony counts of riot and criminal mischief ? the same charges filed against students who did the actual pushing.

"I always felt I was on a good path, and all the sudden I'm being made into a criminal. It was shocking to me they wouldn't even hear me out and let me explain that yes, I was there and shouldn't have been, but I wasn't this person they are making me out to be," Strine said. "No one ever looked at me as an individual. They looked at me as 5,000 Penn State rioters."

Terrified of being branded a felon, Strine agreed to plead guilty to reduced misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and criminal mischief. He served 30 days in jail ? getting out Aug. 4 ? and will either be on parole or probation until 2015.

The consequences didn't end there. Penn State suspended Strine for a semester, and he was booted from ROTC and will have to repay every dime of his scholarship money, a total of $34,000. He also owes $8,500 in court costs, fines and restitution.

Strine said he knows he never should have left his apartment that night, never should have been in the vicinity of the van, never should have laid a finger on its hood.

"The van was already going over. It was so crazy, it was mayhem, and in that moment you stop thinking," Strine said. "I know I wasn't completely blameless. I was there, I touched the van and that was wrong. That's why I was happy to do community service for Penn State. But the criminal justice system went overboard."

His father said he's not seeking to minimize or excuse Justin's involvement, but contended the district attorney's office was far too aggressive ? and his son's punishment far too severe.

"He owns something in this," Jim Strine said. "He just doesn't own what he's got."

Centre County District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller did not return multiple calls and emails seeking information about her office's handling of Strine's case or the other riot cases. Messages left with State College police Chief Tom King and Capt. Jim Grassmyer, scholarship and enrollment officer of Penn State's Army ROTC program, were not returned.

Powers, the Penn State spokeswoman, said any student who goes through the university disciplinary process can contest the charges or sanctions.

"Justin accepted responsibility and the sanctions in the disciplinary conference, and did not contest them through either avenue that was afforded to him," she said, adding that Penn State carefully assessed each student's culpability, the impact of the crime on the community, and other factors before imposing punishment.

Strine said he didn't contest the charges because he wouldn't have been permitted an attorney, and his testimony before the school could have been used against him in the criminal courts. He didn't challenge the sanctions because Penn State warned him that if he did, he could wind up being penalized more severely. And he said he was never told that a suspension would cost him his spot in ROTC.

Assainte, who was with Strine during the riot, said he had no criminal intent that night. She said he got a raw deal.

"I remember him saying, 'All I wanted to do was serve my country, and now I can't because of one little mistake that was caught on tape.' One lapse of judgment and he gets all this thrown at him? I felt so awful," she said. "I just think what happened was really, really unfair."

Zookeeper Don McFarlane weighs and measures an African Millipede during the zoo's annual weigh-in on Aug. 22.

ZSL?s Zoological Director, David Field says: ?We need to know the vital statistics of every animal at the Zoo ? however big or small."

Zookeepers at the London Zoo are responsible for more than 16,000 animals, spending countless hours recording the weight and measurements of each and every animal, including penguins, meerkats, lions and owls.??The measurements are collated in the Zoological Information Management System, from which zoologists can use the data to compare information on thousands of endangered species.

?This information helps us to monitor their health, their diets and their general well-being. By sharing it with other zoos and conservationists, we can use this knowledge to protect wild animals, and use it to assess their health, their behaviours and even their ages,? said Field.

Guest Post: Different Kinds of Document Destruction ? Speaking of ...

The following is a guest post by Andrew Morrell.

The general public and businesses alike fret over how to dispose of their sensitive documents. Anything from a personal paper to PII/PCI data to an accounting sheet can be used by competitors or otherwise be a source of ridicule and liability. The difference for a business is that competition for real money is at stake. A large business can have thousands of pages to destroy. The choice is between small office shredders and professional services.

While it might surprise some, there are enterprises that offer to haul away waste paper in fairly large trucks and use an industrial shredder. This is one way to dispose and recycle a mountain of business documents. Since some of that information is sensitive, it is important to hire someone who completely destroys it.

Shredded Brick, by DaveBleasdale

These services can shred the documents off-site in their industrial shredder, mixing the fine particles with other pieces of paper or they can visit your business with a mobile shredder. This removes the risk of losing the confidential information on the journey, which some businesses prefer.

The principle alternative to outsourcing is office shredding devices. These vary in size and power. They vary in the shred size but most business shredders will cut paper into illegible pieces. Cross-cut/confetti-cut shredding is generally the most secure form and most shredders are designed with this technique.

Fellowes are the top brand when it comes to shredders, with one of their shredders claimed to have been used in the infamous Watergate scandal. One example of their most popular shredders is the Fellowes Powershred SB-97CS, which uses the confetti-cut technique, accepts staples and cuts the paper into 0.16 x 1.5in pieces. Another popular business shredder is the Fellowes 3228901 Intellishred SB-89Ci, which uses the cross-cut technique and cuts the paper into the same size as above.

Both of these shredders are around the $300 mark and both are rated in level 3 (out of 6, although levels 5 and 6 are for top secret/classified files) when it comes to security levels in shredding. For greater security, you will need to look into more expensive shredders with some going past the $1,000 mark.

With this in mind, it is important to weigh up your needs and costs to decide whether you wish to shred confidential information in house with your own shredder or choose to outsource this task to a shredding company.

Andrew Morrell has been involved in the confidential shredding business for several years and believes in the importance of business security and managing paperwork. He currently works for Russell Richardson.

metabolic flatulent: Real Estate Tax Disclosure Loop-hole Finally ...

(PRWEB) January 21, 2005

Legal Update: Similar to Mello-Roos law, California now requires home sellers to disclose other bond-related hidden taxes.

Over 4 million California property owners have properties that are subject to Mello-Roos and 1915 Bond Act special taxes and assessments. With little fanfare, on the first of the year a new law quietly went into effect altering the way each of these home owners discloses this information to prospective buyers by requiring a new property disclosure.

The new law is directly related to Bonds passed under 1915 Bond Act, which are a very popular method for communities to finance the construction of roads, sewers and other infrastructure, very similar to Mello-Roos bonds. These bonds are repaid, normally over a period ranging from 15 to 40 years, by a tax which is levied on properties nearby which directly benefit from the facility constructed. While offering an inexpensive financing tool for cities and communities, these bonds have many negative ramifications for property owners subject to them, including steep penalties, priority lien status and an accelerated right of foreclosure (foreclosure proceedings can begin only 90 to 180 days if the taxes aren?t paid).

Previously, home sellers had been permitted to make ?substantially equivalent? disclosures of these taxes, by providing a copy of the previous year?s tax bill or a general list of these taxes. However, with the passage of this new law, this practice will no longer be allowable and sellers must disclose all of the required information in the form specified by the law.

Peter Placey, president of California Tax Data Inc, California?s leading provider of property tax information and reports, stated how important it is that a buyer understand what these taxes are and how they will affect them in the future.

?While failure to pay these taxes on time might not lead directly to a foreclosure sale of the property,? Placey said, ?the accelerated start of foreclosure proceedings can add thousands of additional dollars to what is owed in penalties and legal fees.? In addition, failure to properly disclose this information at the time of sale can make the seller liable to financial and other repercussions.

There are nearly 3,000 individual special tax and assessment districts spread across the state, affecting nearly 1 out of every 2 properties sold. The lesson to be learned? If you are thinking of selling your home, make certain that you consult with a professional and are making all of the legally required disclosures. Thinking of buying a home? Make sure you are provided with all of the information you need to be able to make the most educated decision possible in regards to your new home purchase.

Tuskegee airman George Hickman, 88, dies

Elaine Thompson / AP file

George Hickman holds a photo of himself in the cockpit of an AT6 trainer airplane on Jan. 16, 2009. Hickman, one of the original Tuskegee Airmen, died Aug. 19, 2012.

By Jeff Black, NBC News

George Hickman, a Tuskegee airman decorated as among the first black pilots to fly for the U.S. military during World War II, died over the weekend.?

His wife, Doris, confirmed to the Associated Press that he died on Sunday morning in Seattle. He was 88.

Hickman had a long association with the sports community in Seattle, working as an usher at University of Washington sporting events as well as NFL football games with the Seattle Seahawks.

?

"Things will be a little different right before we go out on the court not being able to shake the hand of George Hickman," UW men's basketball coach Lorenzo Romar tweeted. "He was one of the most inspirational men that I have ever met."

"George Hickman will be missed. He represented the UW and the Tuskegee airmen with class. I will always appreciate how he treated my family," added UW football coach Steve Sarkisian.

Hickman raised the "12th Man Flag" at a Seahawks game in November.

"He was always quick with a handshake and a smile to those entering the press box and when asked how he was doing, Hickman would answer, 'Blessed to be here,'" the Seahawks' Clare Farnsworth wrote.

In 2007, Hickman traveled with other Tuskegee airmen to Washington, D.C., to receive the Congressional Gold Medal. He also attended President Obama?s inauguration in 2009.

The critically-acclaimed movie, "Red Tails," which is produced by George Lucas and tells the story of the Tuskegee airman ? the first African-American aviators to serve in the armed forces, is being released on DVD and Blu-Ray Tuesday. Tuskegee airman Roscoe Brown and actor Elijah Kelley join NewsNation to discuss.

The grandson of slaves, Hickman grew up in St. Louis, and joined?the segregated pilot training program in Tuskegee, Ala. in 1943, serving until 1945, according to his Army profile.

theGrio: Oldest living Tuskegee Airman is finally honored

"There was nothing better in the world. In that biplane, the guy wires between the wings were like musical instruments," he told The News Tribune of Tacoma, Wash., in 2011.

But Hickman also recalled in a 2009 Associated Press interview the humiliation of being pushed off sidewalks in the South and spit at while in uniform.

As a cadet captain, he was effectively blocked from flying when he called out white superior officers for the mistreatment of a fellow black cadet. "I felt like I had really been mistreated," he told the AP.

New York City students react after seeing the film "Red Tails" and meeting former Tuskegee Airman Rosco Brown.?

In 1955, he met and married his wife in Amarillo, Texas, while volunteering with her mother at a local library that supplied multi-cultural books to public schools, according to an Army article profiling?the Hickmans.

"He was just a wonderful man," Doris Hickman told The Associated Press on Monday.

?

He moved to Seattle in 1955 to work for Boeing. He retired in 1984. ?

Famed Tuskegee Airman, Lt. Col. Luke Weathers, Jr., decorated with multiple medals in World War II, was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery on the same day that Red Tails, a film dramatizing the pilots' heroics was released.

NBC station KING-TV and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Designing Websites | Online Success Articles

?

By Nick Hatton

Website design remains one of the most intriguing art forms of the 21st century. If you are looking to start your own website or blog, however, you do not have to be the next Da Vinci to have a web space that looks and feels like it was designed by a professional. There are three easy paths you can take to get your site looking original and beautiful. Firstly, free blogging websites such as Tumblr and WordPress offer free web space, a URL of your choosing, and a good amount of templates to customize your page. Next, free or paid content management systems like WordPress (free) of SquareSpace (paid) are powerful tools for organizing all kinds of content, from blog posts to an online store. Finally, simple coding languages you can learn include HTML and CSS which offer endless possibilities as far as what your site looks like.

Blogging has become all the rage in the last decade, and blog design has become fairly standardized during that time. However, using a website like Tumblr to host a blog has really become popular in the last five years or so. This is because the hosting site has taken care of the hard part for the user: the coding and design of the site. These sites even offer professional looking templates that can be modified with a few clicks of the mouse, with little or no knowledge of the code that makes them run. This will benefit anyone eager to market themselves on the web.

For the user who needs a more complex site design that includes more functionality, content management systems (CMS) are great alternatives to designing a website from scratch. For example, the WordPress CMS is an incredibly powerful tool that enables a user to set up a site with almost any feature one could think of with relatively little experience. not to mention the best advantage of using WordPress and CMS , its free. Creating an online business using CMS make seem like a tricky process for the novice user but it still can be done. There are many great online tutorials that can be used to help a user a guide them through any problems they may have along the way.

Finally, there are some simple coding languages that one can learn that will open the door to endless possibilities in terms of site design. HyperText Markup Language (HTML) and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) are the instruments of choice for Web 2.0 site designers. Every designer should learn these languages and understand them as they will become an important influence in Web Design. With these two languages, a web developer can build a site from scratch or modify the templates found on a blog hosting website or CMS install. Arctic Sea-Ice Melt Picks Up, Could Set Record

In roughly a month, Arctic sea ice is expected to reach its annual minimum extent, but already, this summer's trend has the look of unusually low-ice year.

As of Monday (Aug. 13), satellite data indicated that the sea-ice extent ? the area of water with at least 15 percent sea ice ? had dipped below the previous record low for that date, in 2007. Specifically, the sea-ice extent had receded to 1.9 million square miles (4.9 million square kilometers), according to the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC).

"It is not looking good right now, if you like sea ice," said Mark Serreze, director of NSIDC at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Sea ice matters to the animals ? polar bears and walruses ? that inhabit it. Changes in sea-ice cover also have far-reaching effects on climate. White ice reflects more energy back out into space than does the dark, ice-free water, which absorbs heat. More dark water exposed by receding ice results in more energy being taken up, which in turn melts more ice.

Every year, sea ice builds up over the Arctic waters during the winter then melts through the summer, reaching an annual minimum in early to mid-September. Continuous satellite records of sea-ice extent go back to 1979. In recent years, a trend toward declining sea-ice cover, with record-setting lows, has emerged.

The previous record minimum occurred on Sept. 16, 2007, when the ice extent reached 1.59 million square miles (4.13 million square kilometers), according to NSIDC data. A German group based at the University of Bremen used different measurements to conclude that September 2011 saw the record low.

Researchers attribute this to a combination of global warming and natural fluctuations in weather.

For instance, the melt rate this summer nearly doubled in early August during a strong Arctic storm.

"This could be due to mechanical break-up of the ice and increased melting by strong winds and wave action during the storm. However, it may be simply a coincidence of timing, given that the low concentration ice in the region was already poised to rapidly melt out," reads a statement on the NSIDC website.

PFT: Giants' Rogers out for season with blood clot

Minnesota Vikings v Detroit LionsGetty Images

Bills WR T.J. Graham had a successful track career and is the son of an Olympic silver medalist, but he wants everyone to know that he?s a football player first and foremost, and not just a sprinter who plays football on the side.

Dolphins QB Matt Moore compares himself to a relief pitcher because he?s rarely the been the chosen starter in his NFL career.

There have been questions about whether the Patriots will get the 2010 version of CB Devin McCourty who looked like one of the best young cornerbacks in the league, or the 2011 version who struggled. But McCourty says he?s just ?the 2012 McCourty.?

Former Jets QB Chad Pennington has an optimistic view of the pairing of Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow.

Ravens K Billy Cundiff is no lock to keep the kicking job in Baltimore.

Bengals G Travelle Wharton knows that as a 31-year-old with a torn ACL, his future is in doubt. But he?s trying to stay positive: ?I?m just going to attack this surgery as if I was a 21-22 year old,? Wharton said. ?I just want to be healthy and attack this thing going into this rehab and surgery with an open mind and get through it. Going down before you even get started is disappointing to anyone. I wanted to come in here and fit into it and be ready to go to work.?

Browns fans are being talked off the ledge over concerns about rookie QB Brandon Weeden.

Steelers WR Antonio Brown says he regrets taking a swing at teammate Ike Taylor in practice: ?I am a football player, not a UFC fighter or someone trying to fight guys. I could?ve been fined; I could?ve broken my hand ? a lot of scenarios could?ve been really bad.?

Texans coach Gary Kubiak liked what he saw of rookie OLB Whitney Mercilus in his preseason debut: ?It?s just one game, but let?s just say he?s caught on fast to what we?re doing. He played 41 plays, and he was excellent.?

Colts RB Donald Brown is finally looking like the player they need him to be.

The Jaguars are making their plans at running back in case Maurice Jones-Drew doesn?t report for the start of the season.

Titans DE Pannel Egboh is competing for first-team reps even though he?s a little-known player who has never played in an NFL regular-season game.

Here?s a good story on Broncos RB Xavier Omon, who has had a rough road to the NFL.

Chargers DT Cam Thomas is facing his third child support case in the last eight months.

Steve Maneri has dropped 40 pounds and moved from the offensive line to tight end for the Chiefs.

Raiders coach Dennis Allen says RB Darren McFadden needs to get preseason touches to be ready for the regular season.

Andre Holmes has a good chance of becoming the Cowboys? No. 3 receiver.

Giants coach Tom Coughlin said of RB D.J. Ware, ?He has a very good attitude. I kind of like what I see.?

Former Eagles DB and assistant coach Jimmy Carr has died at the age of 79.

Says Redskins OLB Brian Orakpo, ?Instead of just working primarily on my pass rush, I want to work on everything ? my run defense, pass drops, everything it takes to be an elite player.?

Bears QB Jay Cutler will play in Chicago?s second preseason game.

Lions backup OT Jason Fox is looking strong in training camp.

Packers third-string QB B.J. Coleman doesn?t appear to have a great shot of making the 53-man roster.

The Vikings want QB Joe Webb to learn to be a pocket passer.

Falcons WR Harry Douglas won?t return any punts during the preseason.

Said Panthers coach Ron Rivera of fights at training camp, ?There?s a lot of sniping that goes on. Those little things shouldn?t matter. We?ve just got to get past that. It?s that time in camp. Let?s be honest, we?re two and a half weeks into it, and they drag a little bit. That?s going to happen. That?s why it is good when you get a chance to play against somebody else.?

Saints DT Sedrick Ellis is heading into a contract year, so he knows he needs to be at the top of his game.

The Buccaneers? coaching staff says backup QB Dan Orlovsky adds valuable experience to the meeting room. (He can teach Josh Freeman how to run out the back of the end zone.)

Cardinals offensive line coach Russ Grimm has taken some criticism for the failure to protect the quarterbacks in Arizona, and he says that criticism is understandable.

Rams OT Barry Richardson signed with the understanding that he was going to be a backup, and he?s surprised he?s now in the starting lineup.

Says 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh of two-way player Demarcus Dobbs, ?Everybody wants a piece of Dobbs right now, on both sides of the ball and special teams. He is a popular guy with our coaching staff. It?s something that?s being, to the best of our ability, thought out and planned and utilized, that he?s not overused, overstrained and we don?t get diminishing returns.?

Seahawks WR Sidney Rice is making progress in his recovery from shoulder surgery, but he?s not expected to play this week.

Investing in Micro-Enterprise is a Wise Economic Growth Strategy ...

Last week the Associated Press reported an increase in the number of microloans disbursed in the United States since the economy began to falter in 2008. These microloans, sometimes as small as $50.00, are sourced by nonprofit organizations that often provide small business training for low-income microentrepreneurs, most of whom are women.

Federal economic policy is out of sync with these trends. The Small Business Administration (SBA)?s Program for Investment in Micro-Entrepreneurs (PRIME) offers technical assistance and support to nonprofit microfinance organizations. But the program, which is tiny to begin with, has experienced budget cuts and was nearly eliminated in fiscal year 2012. The current fiscal year 2013 budget makes the program increasingly vulnerable; if not eliminated, PRIME may experience additional cuts.

In fact, both Congress and the President?s job growth agendas have largely ignored microentreprise. While President Obama?s latest small business focus may help increase access to capital for some, these policies do not accomplish enough for low-income microentrepreneurs who have great potential but lack strong credit or business training.

Given that microenterprise can improve the lives of low-income women and their families, as well as boost the economy, PRIME and other pro-microenterprise initiatives ought to take a greater role in the federal government?s economic growth strategy.

Cultivating microenterprise has a proven return on investment in the United States, as many organizations have demonstrated: Women?s Initiative for Self Employment, Erase Poverty, and more famous entities like Grameen Bank, and Accion, are just a few of the groups that provide low-income entrepreneurs with microloans, as well as training and support in creating viable businesses.

The Women's Initiative, founded in 1988, is exclusively focused on supporting low-income women entrepreneurs in the San Francisco Bay Area. Its program offers a range of supports to low-income women, including training on building a business plan and the nuts and bolts of launching a business, as well as microloans. To date, the Women's Initiative graduates have launched 3,000 small businesses that pay an average of $16.45 per hour, double the minimum wage in California.

Adriana Lahl is a 2010 graduate of the Women's Initiative?s training program. Lahl founded Sal de Vida, a company that produces gourmet salts, spreads, and rice mixes. Lahl now belongs to the highly competitive program with La Cocina, another San Francisco microenterprise NGO that supports low-income food entrepreneurs.

Lahl has a 6-year-old daughter who is on MediCal, and her husband is unemployed. She is hopeful her company can become steady source of income for her family over the long term.

?The Women's Initiative helped me build my business plan and provided me with a $3,000 loan that I am now paying back,? Lahl said. ?It was important to me to begin building relationships and credit for my company.?

Women's Initiative Interim CEO Nicole Levine tells me that her organization?s resources have been constrained in recent years (and they expect their PRIME funding to decline), even as demand for their program is increasing among low-income women.?

Programs like the Women's Initiative offer a level of support that low-income women simply can?t get from traditional lenders, like commercial banks that cater to people who already have resources, or at least good credit.

And a ?small? loan from traditional lenders is still at least tens of thousands of dollars. It is not possible for many low-income women to qualify for a loan of that size. Unlike traditional loans, a microloan can be a much smaller loan at low interest.

Even a $250.00, $1,000 or $3,000 loan, along with support resources, can change the lives of a woman and her family. As the Associated Press story pointed out, ?A 2008 survey by the Aspen Institute found the average household income of families participating in a microenterprise program rose 20 percent to $36,000.?

If we take further advantage of the economic potential of microenterprises, many, many Americans could benefit. According to two major microenterprise advocacy organizations, the Association for Enterprise Opportunity and the California Association for Micro Finance Opportunity (CAMEO), if one in three microenterprises hired just one more person, the US would have zero unemployment. As it stands, the very smallest enterprises that employ fewer than 5 people account for 17 percent of the GDP and employ 31 million people.

Many federal programs are experiencing cuts these days, and PRIME may continue to feel the squeeze in 2013. But the program should not be eliminated. PRIME, along with other support for microenterprise, should become a more central part of the President and Congress?s long-term economic growth strategy--so that groups like the Women's Initiative for Self Employment can cultivate more businesswomen like Adriana Lahl.

Serious About a Lasting Relationship? Uncross Your Fingers. ? BQB ...

Luck. I?m pretty sure that?s what brought my husband and me together on Saint Patrick?s Day several years ago. I toast to the Irish each time March 17 rolls around and thank my lucky stars for letting me stumble across such an amazing man on that cold, drizzling spring break afternoon. What?s even luckier? He seemed to take a liking to me too! Let?s be real . . . that part could be border-line miraculous.

While it took loads of good fortune and miracles to bring us together, rest assured it takes skillful guidance and some heavy lifting to stay connected and involved in a gratifying marriage. I?ve learned that even if the Irish, stars, and fortune cookies are on your side, a strong, healthy relationship still requires handling with care, continual reevaluating, and occasional supervision.

That?s where Barbara Peters comes in. She?s not dressed in a cute leprechaun outfit, passing out four leaf clovers, or flipping tarot cards . . . this woman is a professional couples counselor. Barbara realizes that when it comes to relationships, couples tend to run into similar challenges, and she?s jam-packed some of her best advice into a handy guide called He Said, She Said, I Said: 7 Keys to Relationship Success.

Barbara?s book touches on some of the biggest components of a successful relationship and offers easy-to-understand examples and ideas to adjust your interactions with your spouse. From three perspectives, ?man,? ?woman,? and ?counselor,? she delves into importance of communication, trust, forgiveness, intimacy, acceptance, friendship, and love between partners. I bet I?m not the only one who goes through that list with a mental meter gauging how I?d rate each. The dial continually shifts up and down for each key area, so it?s important to have a resource at the ready when the ?E? light flashes on one of them.

Occasionally, luck will be there to give you a nudge, but I say if you?re serious about a long-term commitment, uncross your fingers, and read this book. You have to learn and work hard for a relationship that will last a lifetime. I think this is a situation where Barbara Peters would agree.

Take a glimpse into the section on friendship. I encourage you to read through the sneak peek below and then purchase this little treasure. It?s like a shot of wheatgrass for your relationship!

She said: I just want to know he understands what my days are like and the stress I?m under. Sometimes I just need him to be my best friend.

I said: We are often quick to offer compassion and caring words to friends when they need our support and help, yet we often don?t recognize that our spouse or partner could use those same considerations on a daily basis to make their life happier or brighter.

Sometimes the role of best friend is the most important role we play in our primary relationship. Little things like a quick neck rub or hug at the right time can do wonders to make our partners feel treasured. As the song goes, ?Try a little tenderness.?

Take time each day to be a ?best friend? to your partner. Has your wife had a hard day with the kids? Wouldn?t she love a few minutes alone in a frothy bath? Maybe Dad could order pizza so dinner preparation could disappear on that particularly tough day? Even better, try whisking your lady away for a few hours alone.

Guys need their wives to be their best friends too. Jockeying for position at the office can be grueling. Threatening knocks under the hood when money is tight can be very worrisome. Even worse, the new receptionist, who is almost half his age, told your man he reminded her of her father. When days filled with problems and insecurities pile up, it?s time for a tender touch, cuddle, and a soothing moment with your man.

The most important thing you can be for each other is a soft place to land when life knocks you down.

The Masquerade Crew: Writing Frustration and A Creative Way to ...

The following is syndicated from the blog of JeanNicole Rivers and is posted here with permission.

If you are a writer?an actor, a painter or even a teacher for that matter you know how it feels to be frustrated with your work, everyone does. I can?t speak for everyone else but as a writer I feel even more frustrated because there are no screaming kids, no condescending director, absolutely no one to be frustrated with except yourself and an inanimate object, the computer. Usually, frustration sets in at those times when it is just you and the computer and you are staring at a page full of words that do not make sense or a page of no words while you wrestle with your brain in an attempt for it to string together one relatively cognizant thought. There are many solutions, drink a bottle of scotch, eat an entire pint of cookies and cream (both of these are personal favorites, just don?t do them at the same time?I speak from horrific personal experience), but in college I learned of another, more interesting avenue, more creative and less self-destructive.

One summer, years ago I studied at Smith College and witnessing my frustration while studying for an exam, one of the professors shared something with me, The Primal Scream.

The Primal Scream takes place one evening on a pre-designated date at a specific time, before final exams. That night every student that is suffering from frustration, exhaustion, paranoia or anxiety due to the pressure of final exams, stops whatever they are doing, wherever they are and screams wildly at the top of their lungs, releasing a steady cry that resounds throughout the campus.

Phenomenal idea!

There are days, when no matter what I do, I cannot fit this incredibly witty joke into my dialogue or cannot, for the life of me, create a climax that is worthy of the rest of the story and on these days, I go into the bathroom, close the door and I release a high-pitched scream for as long as I please.

Does it always fix the problem??No, but you will be amazed at how powerful it makes you feel. With power comes confidence and with the right amount of confidence and hard work, you are limitless.
